For slight diabetic retinopathy, control blood pressure, keeping healthy diet and take prescribed medicine would help. If it is more serious, a painless procedure named laser photocoagulation can be used to seal off leaking blood vessels and remove new vessel growth.

The treatment should depend on how serious it is and type of diabetic retinopathy you have. If it is in the early stage, you don't need treatment right away. You just need to control your blood pressure and blood sugar and have your eyes checked regularly to monitor the changes in your eyes. If it is proliferative diabetic retinopathy, you'll need prompt surgical treatment. If blood gets into the vitreous humor, you may need a vitrectomy.

That depends on the type of diabetic retinopathy you have. If you have nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy, you need no treatment right away, only keep your bllod pressure and diabetes under control. If you have proliferative diabetic retinopathy, you need surgical treatment, such as Focal laser treatment, Scatter laser treatment and Vitrectomy, depending on your own condition.

Your doctor will tell you whether your mom are suitable for surgery according to the specifical problem. If she doesn't need surgery to treat diabetic retinopathy, she only should pay attention to her health problem to keep blood pressure and diabetes under control.
