What can cause a child to have crossed eye?

I have been babysitting this 5-year-old girl for weeks and I noticed her left eye is always crossed. I don't want to ask her parents, but I feel kind of bad for her. What would cause a child to have crossed eye?

Crossed eye is also called Strabismus and often develops in infants and young children. It can be caused by problems with the eye muscles, the nerves that transmit information to the muscles, or the control center in the brain that directs eye movements. It can also develop due to other general health conditions or eye injuries.

It may be caused by damaged optic nerve or a brain optic problem. Unequal pulling of muscles on one side of the eye or ocular muscles can cause crossed eyes. It can be treated by wearing a patch over one of the eyes, visual exercises, glasses with the correct prescription or bifocal or prism correction.
