Usually the retinal detachment can be happened easily among people with high prescription. They could cause this bad thing because of little thing, like smoking, active exercise, showering and so on. If your father has the high prescription, he should not smoke often which could also be bad for his health. Protecting the eyes is such an important thing for us now.

No, smoking won't cause detached retina. However, other visual damages will be done to your eyes when you smoke too much. If you smoke a lot, your vision is very likely to be affected by cataract, but not detached retina. The cause of detached retina include trauma, heavy myopia, complication of prk surgery, and aging.

Well, yes, in my opinion, smoking can just lead to retinal detachment in some degree. So you should ask your father quit it. Generally speaking, by smoking, it actually will be harmful to your health, not only the eyes, but also the body organs. In common, you should know that smoking can produce cyanide which is a retinal toxin. And according to some research, Smokers may develop toxic amblyopic problem. In that way, it may affect your sight, and lead to retinal detachment. And also, it can degrade the night vision. Anyway, it can be kind of dangerous. By the way, smoking can make bilirubin, which is a byproduct of old red blood cells. In that way, it cannot be filtered by the liver as efficiently. yellow eyes can be possible too.
