What are goggles used for in the lab?

I am a chemistry student and I spent most of my time in the lab. But I heard my friends that this was bad for my eyes and they suggested me to wear goggles when I was in the lab. What are goggles used for in the lab?

If you search online, you can find there are lab goggles online. I believe that are the goggles in the lab. And the goggle used in laboratory are required to deal with hazardous chemicals. Besides, the goggle shall working with vessels under pressure or high vacuum in case you are working in such condition so as to protect the eyes. In order to shield your eyes, you'd better check if the goggle and tolerant those airborne hazards, dust particles, flying shards as well as chemical splashes etc.
