Of course, they are different from each other. First, you should know that astigmatism is merely a visual condition of the eye that is caused by its shape. And we can also say that astigmatism is the result of an eye, which has two different powers, and it splits the focus point into two different partial focus points. And because of these different powers, it can lead to blurry vision, shadow images, eye muscle spasms, eyestrain, and headaches. On the other hand, presbyopia is a condition, which is caused by aging. When you get this kind of disease, you will find it difficult to read small words at close distances or to work on the computer for long periods of time. So in some degree, it can be annoying.

I am 82 years old nd contemplating cataract surgery. I was told per the evaluation just performed, I have some astigmatism. I visit the present eye Dr regularly with the chart eye test and several dialated exams. I was never told I had any astigmatism problem. I used to wear contacts but my vision improved over time and I did not require any lenses over the last 12 years or so. Now my recent preop tests say I have astigmatism. Do I actually need the more expensive IOL to correct astigmatism. ?? After all these years did I suddenly get astigmatism??? What's going on here besides $$$$$.

There is the big difference between astigmatism and presbyopia at the symptom and the causes. Astigmatism is a refractive error status. And the cornea and lens surface bending don't agree about the human eye which is not perfect. Eye cornea in a certain Angle area has more curved radian. And some other Angle area is flat because of astigmatism. Due to the cornea or lens surface of these different directions of the bending inconsistency, it makes different direction meridian refractive rate which is not consistent. It made the meridian foreign light not gather in the same focus in this way. The light cannot accurately focus in the retina formation and become the clear objective image. And the presbyopia is happened with the age growing. When people get old, their eyes will get the presbyopia which will make them look not clearly at the near thing. Both of these two eyes problems need the eyeglasses to help them get the right vision.

Generally speaking, astigmatism would make you see multiple identical things in front of you, on the other hand, presbyopia would prevent you from seeing things clearly right in front of your eyes. Both of them are eye problems but their symptoms and causes might be different. Just try to protect your eyes and if anything wrong occurs, go to see a doctor.
