Maybe your mum is joking with you. Many people will get puffy eyes after crying. It is a quite a normal phenomenon. We know that the skin around our eyes is very sensitive because it is full of blood vessels and very thin. When we are crying, our body will react to emotions and cause more blood to flow through our eyes which will lead to swelling. There are many productions of emotional tears which will strain our eyes too. It often goes away after a little bit of time or some home remedies.

Many people will experience puffy eyes after crying. It is noticeable. When you are crying, your tear ducts will produce tears. It is the sodium that in the tears which causes the skin around your eyes to swell up. At this time, your eyes need some time to flush out the extra tears. Most people just take a few hours to get back to normal. If it doesn't, you can have some sleep to help with this. But sleeping right after crying will not help to solve your problem. However, a good night sleep can be a great remedy for your puffy eyes. You need to drink more water after crying. You can also place thin slices of cucumbers or potatoes over your eyes. Then close your eyes and lie down to relax. 15 minutes later, you will find that these compresses can help to relieve puffiness from your eyes.

when your eyes water, the tears that you see are the very same ones that keep our eyes moist and comfortable, and wash out bits of dust and debris. Those basic tear secretions are produced in the conjunctiva, the membrane that coats the entire surface of the eye. These basic secretions don't overflow like the tears associated with emotional crying. Those tears are produced by the lachrymal gland, located in the upper, outer corner of our eyelids. Not only are they much more watery than basic tear secretions, but there are usually so many of them that they overflow and spill down your cheeks and drain through tiny ducts into your nose. It's because emotional tears are more watery, they're less salty than basic tear secretions and the tissue in your eye. So, through the process of osmosis, the water moves into the saltier ocular tissues, which makes them swell up.And then there's all that furtive eye rubbing your "friend" does to hide his tears, which inflames his eyes even further. Still, even though it looks bad, the puffiness and irritation will eventually go away.
