Of course, alcohol can lead to optic neuritis. Optic neuritis is inflammation of the optic nerve, caused by damage to and loss of the protective sheath (myelin) surrounding this nerve that is so vital for good vision. Causes of optic neuritis are various. Nutritional deficiency, such as b12 deficiency may cause optic neuritis. Eye infections, viral infections, sinusitis and leber hereditary optic neuropathy, an inherited form of vision loss that affects mostly males in their 20s or 30s are all causes of optic neuritis. Toxins, including alcohol and tobacco is also typical cause of optic neuritis.
